“Can’t is UnAmerican”
Here’s my take on Tuesday’s Democratic primary (reminder Virginia based news and analysis moving to Virginia FREE - so sign up there for free) Bottom line - Virginia moves from Lean Democrat to Slight Lean Democrat
Excellent and objective analysis from Geopolitical Futures on Iran:
The U.S. does not seek to cripple Iran militarily or existentially but rather to disrupt its determination to dominate the region. The American vision for the region rests on four pillars: Israel, Iran, the Gulf and Turkey. Any disruption to these pillars would jeopardize U.S. interests in the Middle East and hinder its efforts to consolidate its presence and influence. However, Iran suffers from fundamental shortcomings that have accumulated over nearly half a century. Its economy is collapsing and the Iranian people are increasingly frustrated, resulting in accelerating demands for political change. Amid the rapid transformations taking place in the region, Iran now faces greater and more complex challenges that threaten its internal stability, regional security and regime survival.
Andrew Roberts in The Free Press : Trump’s Churchillian Choice at Fordow
On Wednesday July 3, 1940, Winston Churchill had a decision before him as hard as any he ever had to take in his long career of statesmanship. If the Vichy French fleet stationed at Oran in Algeria were to fall into German hands, as seemed highly likely, it would, when combined with the German and Italian navies, pose an existential threat to his country, which after the Fall of France was already gearing itself up for the Battle of Britain.
The French admiral would neither hand his fleet over to the Royal Navy, scuttle it, nor sail it to Canada. So, after some anguished heartache, the lifelong Francophile Churchill ordered it to be sunk, which it was with the loss of 1,299 French sailors.
There are some moments in history when a sudden act of opportune ruthlessness readjusts the world toward a safer path.
Conservative columnist, George Will in the WAPO: It’s too late for progressives to be careful what they wish for Progressives sought an ever more powerful presidency. Now, to their horror, they have it with Trump.
Progressives have the presidency they have long desired but a president they abhor. James Madison warned them: “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm” (Federalist No. 10).
Committee for Responsible Federal Budget: Social Security and Medicare Are Only 8 Years from Insolvency
The Trustees for Social Security and Medicare released their annual reports on the financial status of the programs’ respective trust funds today. The Trustees project that the Social Security Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) trust fund and the Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI) trust fund will both run out of reserves in 2033, and the theoretically combined Social Security Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance trust fund will run out in 2034.
Upon insolvency of the retirement program, beneficiaries face a 23 percent across-the-board benefit cut. Medicare payments, meanwhile, would be cut by 11 percent. Both cuts would grow over time.
Maybe we should try reform entitlements now?
“No. That’s just what they’ll be expecting us to do…”
Who’s They?
Maybe folks like Sloane Margaret Taylor.
She’s doing well - HAPPY baby surrounded by loving parents, family, and friends; HOWVER, Sloane’s entered the world on March 24th carrying how much debt???
Go ahead…tell her we “can’t” do anything about entitlements.
As Danny Glover powerfully said in Silverado:
Or from Ghostbusters on whether or not the American Republic can handle fiscally profligate democracy:
“Why worry. Each of us is wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.”
My P.E. teacher in junior high school, Coach T, said repeatedly and proudly
“Can’t is UnAmerican.”
Word up.
